David E. Daniel
David E. Daniel is
Professor and Dean of Engineering
at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the nation's top-ranked
civil engineering department according to U.S. News and World Report.
He received a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Texas
in 1980 and served on the faculty there until 1996, when he joined the
faculty at the University of Illinois. He has focused his work on the
disposal of waste in landfills and on the cleanup of contaminated waste
disposal sites, with emphasis on clay liners, control of contaminant migration,
and the movement of water and chemicals in saturated and unsaturated soil.
He has won the American Society of Civil Engineers' two highest awards
for papers published in organization journals. He is editor of the book
Geotechnical Practice for Waste Disposal, and is co-author of the books
Waste Containment Facilities and Final Covers for Solid Waste Landfills
and Abandoned Dumps. He has served on a number of advisory committees,
including the Geotechnical Board and the Energy and Environmental Systems
Board for the National Academy of Science's National Research Council.
Dr. Daniel has consulted with contractors at DOE's Hanford facility, the
DOE at Savannah River, several contractors at Oak Ridge, Four-Daniel Fernald,
contractors at INEL, private waste disposal companies (e.g., Chem-Nuclear,
Waste Management, and BFI), and approximately 100 other organizations
concerning the disposal of waste. He is a registered professional engineer
in Illinois and Texas.
